United Negro College Fund Scholarship

At a time when a college degree is what a high school diploma was to previous generations, the minimum entry-level requirement for almost every well-paying career, UNCF plays a critical role in enabling more than 65,000 students each year to attend college and get the education they want and deserve. To close the educational attainment gap between African Americans and the majority population, UNCF helps promising students attend college and graduate by:

• Providing operating funds for its 39 member colleges, all of them small, liberal arts institutions, making it possible for them to offer their students 21st century academic programs while keeping their tuitions to less than half the average of other private colleges;

• Administering 300 scholarship and internship programs, so that even students from low- and moderate-income families can afford college tuition, books and room and board;

• Serving as a national advocate for the importance minority higher education by representing the public policy interests of its students and member colleges, through its annual television program, An Evening of Stars®, and by using print and electronic media to carry out the mission implicit in its motto, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste.”

Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, the only private medical school in the Greater Southwest, is recognized as a premiere academic health science center and is known for excellence in education, research and patient care.  The Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) Saturday Morning Science Community Outreach Program includes 10 -18 year old chosen by their teacher because they have demonstrated potential and have displayed an interest in the science school program. According to Dr. James Phillips Associate Dean of BCM, “we can't just train those students who come to us.  We're not just responsible for Baylor students, we're responsible for the health care of the community,” he said.  "And the fact is there are too few minority physicians practicing today."

The Saturday Morning program at BCM got its start in January 2005.  Teachers at 15 Houston Independent School Districts schools choose 10-15 kids who attend a two-hour session for 11 weeks in the spring semester.  BCM faculty members teach the students and BCM medical and graduate students mentor them.  Session topics range from "Drugs and the Brain" to "Heart Disease Prevention."

Frontline Outreach

Frontline Outreach of Orlando prepares urban youth to be world-class leaders and followers of Christ through early-childhood education and character development.  As a recognized leader in service to families, Frontline engages dynamic individuals to equip the Ministry, while building financial stability to attain and maintain our vision.  As Orlando’s oldest parachurch community ministry, we lead the way in providing early childhood education, after-school programs, and leadership programs for children. Our work to create a superior model of urban early childhood education—and character education for the development of leaders—will have great impact on the schools, churches, and the city in years to come.

At Frontline Outreach we are a leading provider of educational and leadership programs for urban youth and their families in Orlando.  We start serving children as early as infancy in the Early Education Center and prepare them for leadership, while equipping their families to transform the community.  Our ministry initiatives include: Early Childhood Education, Family Education, Recreation and Leadership Development

Orlando Minority Youth Golf Association

The Orlando Minority Youth Golf Association program is designed to introduce minority youth, ages 6 to 18, to the sport of golf and to equip them with the skills to succeed in both golf and life. By teaching the skills required to succeed on the golf course, these inner-city and urban-area youth learn the importance of discipline which will help them grow in almost every aspect of life. The youth also develop various character traits such as positive self-esteem, self-motivation, self-direction and self-respect. Additionally, the OMYGA program aids in producing quality golf athletes that then qualify for high school and college golf teams.

Team HEAL

Founded by Clarence L. Shields Jr., M.D. in 1994, Team HEAL was developed as a direct result of the severely diminished statewide budget cuts to school sports programs. Before Team HEAL’s inception, Dr. Shields was the practicing team doctor for the Los Angeles Rams. During this time, Dr. Shields had been volunteering his services as team doctor to local inner-city high schools as well. The community had suffered the tragic loss of one football player due to heart complications after a game, and Dr. Shields had been approached on numerous occasions by school coaches asking him to provide medical care and surgeries pro-bono for injured athletes. After performing several medical treatments for students free of charge, Dr. Shields decided something more must be done for these unprotected student athletes. At that point, The Team HEAL Foundation was born, and it has since touched the lives of over 20,000 students. The foundation has worked with several high schools since its founding, but now provides its services to the 2,500 student-athletes at Banning, Carson, Crenshaw, and Manual Arts High Schools.
